A Kensington man accused of stabbing another driver during a road-rage confrontation on the Blue Route in Lower Merion was held for trial on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Samuel Marquez, 40, faces charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, weapons offenses and evading arrest after the Sept. 6 attack on the ramp connecting I-76 East to I-476 South, first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. He remains in custody on $1 million bail.
At the preliminary hearing, the victim testified that Marquez had been driving a U-Haul aggressively, veering into his lane and gesturing at him on I-76. The victim said he brake-checked the truck to get it off his tail.
As the victim took the exit ramp, the U-Haul intentionally rammed his vehicle while a minivan and SUV traveling with Marquez pulled ahead and stopped, boxing him in, according to his testimony. The victim said he was punched in the face through his open car window and heard Marquez say, "Go get my knife."
The victim testified he crawled out the window of his damaged Mercedes-Benz and called 911 from a highway median.
While trying to read a license plate, he felt a blow to his side. He thought he had been punched. Then he saw blood.
The attack left the victim with a 2-inch wound to his lower abdomen and a shallow slash to his left arm, prosecutors said. He was taken to Lankenau Medical Center for treatment, Pennsylvania State Police said, according to Patch.
The confrontation started around 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 after a minivan driven by Marquez's girlfriend had engine trouble and the group pulled onto the shoulder, according to the affidavit of probable cause. When they merged back, they cut closely in front of a Mercedes-Benz. The vehicles were part of a caravan helping Marquez move from Reading to Philadelphia.
After the stabbing, Marquez fled in the U-Haul. Lower Merion Police located the truck at a Sunoco gas station at 1240 E. Lancaster Ave. in Bryn Mawr. Marquez was arrested at nearby Memorial Park.
Assistant District Attorney Robert George said the knife was recovered behind the Sunoco, still covered in the victim's blood. An earlier Inquirer report described the weapon as a box cutter; Marquez had a silver box cutter in his pocket when arrested.
Defense attorney Andrew Levin argued the chaotic nature of the fight made it unclear who held the knife. "It's clear that the complaining witness got stabbed. I don't think it's clear by who," Levin said after the hearing.
The melee involved Marquez, his nephew, his girlfriend and another male relative, according to Levin. Villanova University was placed under a temporary lockdown while police searched for the suspect, Patch reported.
At the time of the stabbing, Marquez had an active arrest warrant out of Delaware County for the gunpoint robbery of a Royal Farms gas station in Upper Chichester in November 2022, according to the Inquirer.
Marquez is scheduled to be arraigned in Montgomery County Court in November.
