Firefighters and PECO crews responded to a confirmed natural gas leak at several businesses on Greenfield Avenue in Ardmore on Wednesday, Aug. 12, after occupants reported the smell of gas at 9:26 a.m.

Merion Fire Company of Ardmore, part of the Lower Merion Township Fire Department, arrived first from Station 25 directly across the street, according to an incident alert posted by the fire company. Crews investigated the affected stores and secured the area before calling PECO to the scene.

PECO technicians located and addressed the leak. Station 25 personnel stayed on site afterward to ventilate the building and confirm the spaces were safe before clearing the scene.

No injuries were reported.

The fire company's alert, authored by Graham Fuller, did not identify the specific businesses affected or describe the cause of the leak. Four photographs from the scene were published alongside the alert on the Merion Fire Company's website.

The fire company reminded residents that gas odors should always be taken seriously. Anyone who smells natural gas should leave the area immediately, avoid flipping electrical switches or doing anything that could create a spark, and call 911 from a safe location.

PECO, which serves more than 500,000 natural gas customers across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Lancaster counties, maintains a 24-hour gas emergency line at 1-800-841-4141.
