Lower Merion School District families with children in special education can join a free Zoom session on helping kids identify and express their feelings.

The district's Committee for Special Education will host "Helping Children Notice and Communicate What's Inside" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. The session is open to LMSD parents, guardians and staff.

Speech-language pathologist Kim Singleton will lead the presentation. Singleton holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and focuses on neurodiversity-affirming support.

The session addresses a common challenge for families: children in special education may notice physical and emotional signals only after they become intense, may not understand what those signals mean, or may not have a ready way to share them. Singleton plans to cover treating behavior and movement as information, introducing body-based language, and supporting communication through speech, gesture, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) or movement.

The presentation will include sample materials and time for questions. The district's announcement did not list a registration requirement. The Zoom link is available on the LMSD events page.
