Podcast creator Karina Longworth brings her national cinema tour to Bryn Mawr Film Institute on Thursday, Oct. 22, for a 35mm screening of the 1949 film "The Heiress."
Longworth, the writer and film historian behind "You Must Remember This," will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion about the podcast's latest season. The screening starts at 7 p.m. in Theater 4 at the nonprofit theater, 824 W. Lancaster Ave. in Bryn Mawr.
Tickets are $14.50 for adults. A senior discount is available. Tickets are on sale through BMFI's website.
"The Heiress," directed by William Wyler, stars Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift and Ralph Richardson. The 35mm print is courtesy of Universal Pictures. Broad Street Review highlighted the screening as one of the Philadelphia area's top repertory events for October.
Longworth's fall tour visits historic cinemas and repertory theaters across the country. In a May interview with MovieJawn, she said the tour grew out of her studies in film preservation at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York.
"I felt like I wanted to be out in the world and I learned so much in that program, but it's hard to apply it to real life in some ways," Longworth told MovieJawn.
After the film, Longworth will discuss the new podcast season, "The Bisexuals," which launched Sept. 15. The season traces the life of torch singer Libby Holman and her circle of friends and lovers, including Montgomery Clift, Tallulah Bankhead, Josephine Baker and Nicholas Ray.
Philadelphia film publication MovieJawn will sell zines in the BMFI lobby before and after the show. Ticketholders on the tour also receive a postcard with a 15 percent discount code for "The Bisexuals" merchandise.
The event falls during BMFI's centennial year. The historic Seville Theatre at 824 W. Lancaster Ave. first opened Oct. 1, 1926. The nonprofit now draws nearly 120,000 patrons per year across four screens equipped for digital, 35mm and 70mm projection.
Scott Fisher, BMFI's executive director, leads the organization as it marks 100 years. As we reported Oct. 6, the institute hosted the Pennsylvania premiere of "Women Laughing" earlier this month.
