Lower Merion residents can drop off unused prescription and over-the-counter medications at the township police headquarters, 71 E. Lancaster Ave. in Ardmore, on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Ardmore location is one of 41 sites across Montgomery County participating in Drug Take Back Day, part of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Mainline Media News reported that Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele and Lower Providence Township Chief of Police Michael Jackson, president of the Montgomery County Police Chiefs Association, announced the countywide effort.
The event is free. No appointment is needed.
Police officers will staff every location during the four-hour window. Additional drop-off sites may still be added, according to the announcement.
Accepted items include prescription and over-the-counter tablets and capsules, inhalers, creams, ointments, nasal sprays, pet medicines and vaping products with the battery removed. Needles, liquid medications and intravenous or injectable solutions are not accepted.
Most of the 41 sites are at police departments, but four are at grocery stores staffed by officers. Those include Wegmans in North Wales, Giant Food Store in Willow Grove, Giant Food Store in Stowe and Wegmans in Collegeville.
Several police departments near Lower Merion are also participating, including Conshohocken at 400 Fayette St., Springfield Township at 1510 Paper Mill Rd. in Wyndmoor and Plymouth Township at 700 Belvoir Rd. in Plymouth Meeting.
The countywide program has collected more than 147,500 pounds of medications since it began in 2010, according to the district attorney's office.
Residents who cannot make the Oct. 24 event can use one of more than 50 permanent prescription drug disposal boxes, most at police departments throughout Montgomery County. Some of those boxes were sponsored by the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association and Pennsylvania American Water to help protect the local water supply. A full list of year-round drop-off locations is available on the Montgomery County District Attorney's website.
