Volunteer firefighters from Merion Fire Company of Ardmore responded to an elevator emergency at 401 W. Lancaster Ave. in Haverford on Saturday, Aug. 15, marking the company's second elevator rescue in less than a month.

Station 25 crews arrived at 12:14 p.m., investigated the situation and safely resolved the incident before returning to service, according to an alert posted on the company's website. No injuries were reported. Graham Fuller, who authored the alert for the company, noted that elevator emergencies are among the many types of calls volunteers train to handle year-round.

The call came just over three weeks after Merion Fire Company volunteers freed a person trapped in an elevator at St. James Place in Suburban Square on July 23, a 4:44 a.m. operation that required navigating a locked building and a rooftop control room, as we reported at the time.

Elevator rescues are among the wide variety of non-fire emergencies the company's roughly 50 volunteer firefighters and officers handle across a service area that includes more than 150 apartment buildings and 770 commercial properties. The company responds to approximately 400 alarms per year, according to its public profile. Recent documented calls include a vehicle crashing into a building at 225 W. Lancaster Ave. on June 30 and a gas leak affecting three businesses at Lancaster and Anderson avenues on June 29.

Founded in 1890, Merion Fire Company is the oldest of seven volunteer fire companies serving Lower Merion Township. The companies receive partial township funding but depend heavily on resident donations through annual fund drives.
