Firefighters from the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore responded to a fire alarm at 49 Anderson Ave. in Suburban Square on Sunday, Aug. 16, and found no emergency after investigating the building.

Station 25 crews arrived at 6:39 p.m., checked for signs of fire or other hazards, and cleared the scene, according to an incident report posted by the fire company. Graham Fuller, who authored the fire company's report, did not identify what triggered the alarm or name the tenant at the address.

No injuries were reported. Crews returned to service after completing their investigation.

The call marks the fourth time since July 3 that Station 25 has responded to the Ardmore commercial district, a stretch that includes Suburban Square, Greenfield Avenue and the new SEPTA station on Station Avenue.

On July 17, a struck gas line at 60 Coulter Ave. in Suburban Square forced the evacuation of three stores and a street shutdown. Firefighters controlled the leak and ventilated underground before the situation was declared under control about one hour later and turned over to PECO. On July 3, crews investigated a fire alarm at 49 Station Ave., the new SEPTA station in Ardmore, and found no hazard.

Most recently, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, firefighters responded to a reported gas odor at several businesses on Greenfield Avenue, directly across from the fire station. Crews secured the area and requested PECO to the scene. As we reported that day, the Greenfield Avenue incident prompted a multi-agency response.

None of the four calls resulted in a confirmed fire.

The fire company has not publicly commented on whether the frequency of commercial-district calls this summer reflects a broader trend or is coincidental. No follow-up investigation is pending from the Aug. 16 alarm.
