Firefighters from multiple Lower Merion Township companies converged on a Lark Lane residence in Villanova on Wednesday after a basement fire sent smoke showing from the home and triggered a Working Fire Dispatch that pulled resources from across the township.
The call came in at 1:08 p.m. Station 23, the Bryn Mawr Fire Company, holds primary coverage for the Villanova area and was the lead company on scene. Station 25, the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore, responded to assist. When first-arriving crews saw smoke coming from the residence, they escalated the call to a Working Fire Dispatch, bringing additional companies to the address.
Crews made what the Merion Fire Company described as an aggressive interior attack, reaching the basement and knocking down the fire before it could spread to the rest of the structure. Other firefighters searched the home, ventilated the building and checked for hidden fire in walls and ceilings.

Lower Merion's seven volunteer fire companies staff the township's emergency response. According to the department's recruitment site, emergency call volume has doubled over the past 25 years while staffing levels have not kept pace. The Merion Fire Company, founded in 1890, is the oldest of the seven.
The Working Fire Dispatch protocol exists for exactly this kind of scenario: when initial crews determine a fire is beyond what a single company can handle, the dispatch brings engines, ladders, and personnel from neighboring stations within minutes.
