The Wynnewood post office is not closing.

Federal Realty Investment Trust, which owns Wynnewood Shopping Center at 50 East Wynnewood Road, told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Wednesday that it is finalizing a lease extension with the U.S. Postal Service for the post office location. The company said it anticipates no disruption to services at the Lower Merion outpost.

The announcement follows weeks of rumors among Wynnewood residents that the USPS branch might shut down. Federal Realty did not disclose the length or terms of the new lease, and USPS has not issued its own public statement confirming the extension. The Lower Merion Times was unable to reach a postal service spokesperson for comment.

What's behind the rumors

The source of the closure speculation is unclear. Wynnewood Shopping Center has seen significant tenant turnover in recent years, including the departure of Bed Bath & Beyond, which left a 50,000-square-foot vacancy. That space is now slated for Club Studio Fitness, which Federal Realty announced in early 2025 as a new tenant expected to open toward the end of 2026.

The churn may have fueled concern that the post office, a daily-use anchor for residents picking up packages and mailing letters, could be next.

What residents should know

The post office remains open at its current location inside Wynnewood Shopping Center. No Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners action is required for the lease, which is a private agreement between the property owner and the federal government.
