A group of men stabbed and beat a driver on a Lower Merion highway ramp Sunday, Sept. 6, after a U-Haul rear-ended the victim's vehicle, State Police said.

Two suspects were arrested after a pursuit that stretched from the Blue Route to Lancaster Avenue. The chase briefly triggered a shelter-in-place at Villanova University and left a Lower Merion Township police officer injured in a crash.

The attack began around 5:30 p.m. on the ramp connecting I-76 East to I-476 South, Patch reported. After the rear-end collision, several men from the U-Haul and possibly other vehicles assaulted the victim, according to the Pennsylvania State Police preliminary investigation. The U-Haul driver stabbed the victim once in the abdomen with a knife, State Police said.

Troopers found the victim along the right shoulder near the crash scene. Narberth EMS transported the victim to Lankenau Medical Center. Police sources described the injuries as serious, according to Daily Voice.

The attackers fled in the U-Haul and other vehicles. State Police pursued them with help from Lower Merion Township police.

During the chase, a Lower Merion officer crashed near Pennswood Road and Montgomery Avenue, NBC10 reported. The officer was treated at a hospital and released.

Lower Merion police spotted the U-Haul at the Sunoco gas station at 1240 E. Lancaster Ave. shortly after the suspects fled. The driver ran from the station on foot, State Police said. Officers arrested him a short time later in a park a few blocks away.

A law enforcement source told CBS News Philadelphia that a second suspect, described as a family member of the U-Haul driver, was also arrested by State Police. That person had allegedly been following the U-Haul in a separate vehicle. Police recovered the knife used in the alleged stabbing after the suspect discarded it, according to the same source.

During the search, authorities received reports that a suspect could be armed with a gun and knife. Villanova University issued a shelter-in-place alert while officers swept the area. The university lifted the order around 6:40 p.m.

Police set up a command post in the 7-Eleven lot on County Line Road in Lower Merion during the search, the Delaware County Times reported.

As of Monday, Sept. 7, State Police had not publicly identified the victim or any suspects, announced charges, or explained what sparked the confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing.
